Assumption Church & Assumption University Chapel
PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT
“This exhibit represents a significant learning opportunity for the photography students involved. When several photographers are gathered in one place, there is the potential for their images to be very similar. However, this was certainly not the case, as our students submitted work that was as authentic and unique as they are individuals. These budding ‘shutterbugs’ were inspired by both the experience and, afterward, by the rich expression revealed in their works. Far more than a mere architectural photography session, there was a unity of both creative and spiritual expression as is evident in these artistic photographs.”
Update: 2014-11; The Roman Catholic Diocese of London, Ontario, announced in early November that, regrettably, despite 7 years of fundraising, Assumption Church would be closed with parishioners being moved to another church. Due to a lack of funds, there is no way to pay for the $15 million in necessary repairs to this historic structure; the oldest Catholic church south of Montreal. The students and staff of Brennan High School who took part in the opportunity to photograph this church realize what a privilege this was.
In late May 2011, our Grade 12 Advanced Photography program took advantage of a significant photo opportunity that was provided through the combined efforts of the Pastoral team at Our Lady of Assumption Church, the Campus Minister at Assumption University and senior administration with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board. Our students got to experience a full afternoon photography session at the majestic and historic church that houses the Province of Ontario's oldest continuous Roman Catholic parish. We were also given the opportunity to take photographs inside Assumption University's beautiful Chapel. The results are compelling and spiritually moving, as you can experience for yourself in the selection of images shown below.
We would like to thank Fr. Chris Valka, Campus Minister at Assumption University; Paul Picard, Director of Education and Mike Seguin, Superintendent of Education for the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board; and Elaine Carr, Arts Consultant, for helping to bring this project and exhibit to fruition.
*Prints from this collection have been mounted and displayed in an physical exhibit at Assumption University.
