F.J. Brennan High School has a rich history of artistic instruction, inspiring young people in their creative expression through a variety of media and artistic genres, going back several decades under its former name, "Corpus Christi". Within the general Arts stream resides a photography program that has developed into one of the most robust and prolific high-school level photo programs in the region. Our approach is simple; Help our learners to see things around them photographically. How does one accomplish this? We start with the basics, with an appreciation for the history and social context behind today's highly advanced cameras. Our grade 11 Introductory Photography students learn the basics of light, focus and manual exposure control, starting their semester using fully-manual 35mm SLR cameras. Once the technical foundation has been laid, our program shifts gradually to other aspects of theory and foundation, moving toward the artistic elements of composition. Learners in both of the senior grade levels begin to appreciate and eventually mentor each other in the finer nuances of photography, including working with human subjects, lighting the human subject to bring out gentle contour and form (as opposed to flat shapes) and photographic abstraction. Photo assignments and summative projects are geared to a gradual development of a vast array of insights, critical discernment and other skills that culminate in the student being able to create a body of photographic work that shows authenticity of human emotion, hidden beauty in the everyday and honest, yet, compelling interpretation of the world around him or herself.
